Placing a bet in a beauty contest can be likened to playing a Russian Roulette, defined by Wikipedia as a lethal game of chance in which a player places a single round round in a revolver, spins a cylinder, places the muzzle against their head and pulls the trigger..
It is a hit or a miss thing, and in this years Mr. International Thailand 2017, a lot of pageant netizens placed their bet to Sirichai Meelarp and Panu Kuibungsim basing on their youth and their 'kyutness' appeal and then suddenly a much older underdog Phongsan Suwanliwong pulled the trigger and ended their hopes and dreams of putting another beautiful "lodi" in the pedestal.
Another classic example happened in Miss Supranational 2017 where every chants Miss Colombia's name and out from the blue the Dark horse Jenny Kim of Korea doused everybody's excitement and feverish anticipation when she surprised everyone when she claimed her crown.
Of course there are other factors to consider other than beauty and personality. There's the brain factor and the classic example was Karen Ibasco of Philippines in Miss Earth 2017, who despite wild protest worldwide nobody can't deny (even Miss Earth 2017 candidates agree with the judges that Karen won fair and square)
I think these are the signs of times. Beauty and beauty alone is not a guarantee to win titles. One has to be beautiful, and if you have the amalgam of beauty and intellegence ... that;s an added plus!
