There was this discussion among friends about candidates who are titleholders who are being sent repeatedly in international pageants. Take Lucas Gil case. He is the current Mr. Brazil, and he almost won in Mr. World 2007 being the first RUto Spain's Juan Postigo. Some people say that should have been enough because he has proven to all and sundry that he is good and that he can win titles. Being sent again in the International Man contest in Bali these people say, is a wrong career move for him. Look what happened. He find himself at a risk being given a lesser award than what he already accomplished. This is some kind of demotion in itself, they said. And indeed that's what happened to Lucas because in the said contest there were only less that 15 candidates, and despite the numbers which everybody think is less competetion, Lucas wound up 2nd runner up only. Adding more salt to the wound, two candidates he did kicked ass with in Mr. Brazil became international title holders, an accomplishment for Brazil too hard to surpass . The same thing happened with Alberto Garcia, Mr Handsome Venezuela title holder who won another title Mr. World Model 2007 in Guatemala. He was sent to Malaysia this December for Mr. International, and he came short because only the third runner-up trophy was given to him. Another classic example is Denver Olivares who won Ginoong Filipinas. He competed again in Mr. Philippines this year ... and he was not even in the final 10.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with taking chances in another pageant. What my friends believe was that they should have protected what ever gains or stature they already have ... and stop when everything is all rosy and heavenly. To Lucas Gil, you are still number one in our books. And I believe your time will come. Good luck with your modelling gigs in the Philippines and all over Asia.
